Efficient Preparation of Acyclic Amidinium Salts by Orthoester Exchange and Amidinium Salt Transamination

A series of symmetrical and unsymmetrical acyclic amidinium hexafluorophosphates were prepared in good yields. Symmetrical N,N'-dialkyl-substituted formamidinium salts were produced by direct reaction of triethyl orthoformate with two equivalents of a 1o amine in the presence of ammonium hexafluorophosphate. N,N,N'-Trialkyl- and N,N,N',N'-tetraalkyl-substituted formamidinium salts were prepared by transamination of N,N-disubstituted formamidinium hexafluorophosphates using 1o and 2o amines, respectively.
